Explanation of the importance of technical standards:
All applicants are held to the same academic and technical standards of admission and training, with reasonable accommodations as needed for students with disabilities.
If a student states he/she can meet the technical standards with accommodation, then the college will determine whether it agrees that the student can meet the technical standards with reasonable accommodation; this includes a review of whether the accommodations requested are reasonable, taking into account whether accommodation would jeopardize clinician/patient safety, or the educational process of the student or the institution, including all coursework, clinical experiences and internships deemed essential to graduation.
Physical Requirements for the VA/VT Program:
- Able to stand, bend, and stoop.
- Able to lift a minimum of 30 pounds.
- Able to detect odors sufficient to maintain environmental safety and patient needs.
- Able to hear monitor alarms, emergency signals, and cries for help.
- Able to hear warning signs from animals and humans of impending danger/injury.
- Able to manipulate instruments, supplies and equipment with speed, dexterity, and good eye-hand coordination.
- Able to use their hands and wrists to securely restrain animals.
- Able to engage in procedures involving grasping, pushing, pulling, holding, and manipulating.
- Able to assist with and/or lift, move, position, and manipulate the patient who is unconscious.
- Demonstrate calm and effective responses, especially in emergency situations.
- Able to prevent or escape injury caused by animals (biting, kicking, stampede).
- Able to accurately observe a patient and read medical records, prescriptions, and microscopic test results.
